Murphy's law at it's best

Imagine a situation where you have mainly one server that acts as your mailserver, webserver, bugtracker, blog, wiki, and numerous other small services.

Now imagine that this server crashes from one day to the other without prior notice and is offline for some days.

It's a strange feeling, not to be able to read emails! And it led to some questions:

  • Is it intelligent to have everything concentrated on one server?
  • Why didn't we ever plan a recovery and emergency plan before the crash?
  • Should I move my stuff to another server (service provider) as soon as possible?
  • Is it really that bad to be "offline" for some hours?

I think we'll stay on this server for now - other ISP's have their problems, too. Talking about a genious recovery plan is on my todo-list. And no, after some hours of acclimating myself I felt very confortable without getting spam every 10min. :-)

BTW: As you can read this post, the server seems to be back up and running.

So keep up the good work - and thanks to Christoph and Oli that brought the server back to live!
