Howto install Sunrise Mobile Internet on MacOS X Leopard

Written byBy: Mario Rimann.

I've bought a Novatel Ovation MC950D USB-Modem to get Internet access whereever I am, independent of a cable or wlan hotspot.

Installing it on Windows XP is pretty simple: Just connect the USB-Modem to the Notebook and it will appear as a drive and automatically run the installer the first time you connect the modem. Click next, next, finish - and it works :-) The little controller application for the modem wasn't as stable as I would wish but not really disturbing.

Then I bought my MacBook and expected an equally simple installation procedure - but failed. Here are the steps that I took - and I'm writing this blog post via this USB-Modem :-)

  • Inser the SIM card that is in the USB modem into your mobile phone. Unset the PIN so that you're not asked for it (There's just no option to enter it under MacOS X and the SIM would stay blocked). Put the SIM back into the USB modem.
  • Install the drivers for the MC950D USB Modem. I got a cd-rom together with the modem and installed those drivers first. Later I installed the current version from the sunrise website. Don't know whether those from the cd-rom would work.
  • The USB-Modem will be recognized and shown in the network settings now. But connecting is still impossible. I had to search a lot, but finally found a post on the macprime.ch forum that helped me. These are the steps:
    • Go to your system preferences, then to the network section. Click on the Novatel Modem on the left pane.
    • Do not change anything on the right pane. Click "more options" (or whatever this button is called on English Leopard)
    • Select Manufacturer = Novatel, Model = GSM
    • Then enter the APN. It must be exactly like this: ISP.SUNRISE (yes, everything in capital letters, with a dot between, no spaces)
    • Then click OK to confirm the changes and in the other window click Apply.
    • Now you should be ready. Clicking on "connect" directly worked for me.

Maybe this is applicable also for Swisscom mobile internet. I've read they are shipping the same USB-Modem.

    Regarding Swisscom:
They ship a "Huawei E220 HSDPA USB Modem". While I don't claim the installation-procedure to be as easy as under windows (compared to a normal Slot-Unlimited-Card), but it was very easy to do: I just had to follow the (not really long) set-up guide.
When I connect the dongle, I just need to start up an application which will check for the device and ask me for my SIM-PIN (I even can disable the PIN from the software..). Then I have a simple interface with a "CONNECT" button.. that's it.
But there's one thing missing: There's no possibility to check for the already jused bandwidth, so I called the hotline and the told me to write an SMS (I think it was "Status" to 444 or something,.. works with every Swisscom-SIM, btw.) - this would then list everything. Problem: In spite of the Windows-Software having an SMSfeature built in, there's no way of SMS-communication in the Mac-Software. However, I dont't really feel like putting the SIM in my cell to check that :D
The second down-side is the missing "seamless handover" under OSX. Too bad.. :-(

What about the speed of this internet mobile solution? they claim 7.2mb/s, at home I have 5MB/s with Cablecom and download rates that are sometimes around 500Kb/s
My mother has a similar product in Belgium Mobistar, and download rates are terrible :-( about 30k/s when it's ok!
