TypoScript Pocket Guide from O'Reilly
Written byBy: Mario Rimann.
Filed under Books .Today I finished "reading" the new Book "TypoScript Pocket Guide" from Patrick Lobacher. I bought it, to have a small reference at hand when working with TypoScript.
Let me do a short review of that nice product:
- With around 270 pages is a rather big Pocket Guide. But it still qualifies for this series of books :-)
- The global structure of the book is well done: One can find the point very fast either via the TOC or the index at the end of the book.
- I think it covers most parts of TypoScript - but I've to admit that I'm missing the complete overview myself.
- There are some examples in it which help to understand.
But there are also some point that I want to complain about. Or at least propost to improve for the 2nd edition of this book or the English translation:
- The author tries to explain how to "use" the book at several points in the book. That should be reduced to one "introduction" at the beginning.
- There are some issues with some sentences, that are not as clear as they could/should be (they leave place for interpretion where no space is available).
- Some pages are just tables. There is no explanatory text, no examples. A bit more details would be great. On the other hand, the book wouldn't qualify as a pocket guide then, ...
But now, enough bashing. Patrick, you've written a great book and I'm sure I will use it often the next months :-)
If you ever plan to publish a second edition or an English translation - I'm willing to do a pre-print review of the next edition for some credits in the book!

First of all - thanks for the compliments :-)
This is just the first review which goes into detail... and I'm very happy with it.
The positive things are clear *gg* - but I have a few remarks on the complains:
- The "how to read this book" was a whish from the editor. I thought that the readers don't need this stuff but they demanded
- The second point is correct :-) I have to work on it ...
- If I would have commented this stuff in the tables additionally - the book would have been much much thicker than it is now. It is already the biggest "short & good" from this O'Reilly series worldwide (*proud*) :-)
Hope they will plan a second edition (depends on how much will be sold) and/or a english version - in both cases I will contact you to do a review (of course for credits :-) ). Thanks for the offer. For the first version I had Jo Hasenau & Christian Trabold...
Bye
Patrick
