The Peter Principle

I read a blog of a callcenter/hotline/helpdesk employee that writes down tales of his job and the "daily insanity at the hotline". As I'm also working on some sort of a helpdesk, I sometimes feel with him as he writes of strange customers. Now after some break, he wrote a new post and talked about the Peter Principle which made me curious.

In short, the Peter Principle states that:

"In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence."

Which results in the conclusion that the whole system might break at some point, when every position is filled with a person that is incompetent for this position.

Interesting to read. For all the German readers: The German wikipedia article is shorter and gives a better overview :-)

Organizations which work according to the Peter Principe collapse pretty fast. With incompetent leaders you don't make any business. - However, in organizations which aren't exposed to competition like governmental institutions or monopole situations this can happen.
