HP nc6320 Windows XP installation

I never thought that an actual Notebook like the HP nc6320 could bring up that big problems when trying to install Windows XP Professional.

First problem: The Windows installer stops with an error message like "no hard drive found". After trying multiple times, I asked Google for help. And it brought up a solution: It's the missing S-ATA driver that's needed to access the hard drive. This can be changed in the BIOS - and it works.

Second problem: There's an enormous load of drivers you need to download and install. And after that - there is still one f*cking "unknown device" in the device manager. I'll get a second machine out of our stock on monday to cross check the entries in the device manager (it's good that we bought multiple machines of the same type).

Sidenote: Before trying to install Windows, I installed Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS without any problems! Even WLAN worked from the beginning witout any headache...

We'll see how the adventure "Installing Windows on HP nc6320" goes on next week - stay tuned.

Did you ever end up finding that unknown device? I am having the same issue right now, and it is really beginning to frustrate me.

    Hi "Fish" (?)
I didn't get this further as I was not in the office all the time and if I was here, I had other work to do. I think I'll work on this issue this week - as soon as I find a solution, I'll provide it in my blog. So just stay tuned :-)

Just thought I would help you guys out. Some of the more annoying problems with this laptop have caused me to actually have to make another image, for the first time in about 4 years.

The major issue is the new SCSI hard drive which has to be loaded from a floppy drive. This is the same for tt4400 tablet. I tried making a bootable windows xp cd, that included these drivers, with little luck after about 5 different tries. So just get an external floppy and make the disk, boot to your xp CD and press f6 to load the driver on the OS install.

Problem 2 - Still working on this issue. I thought it was the HP Intergrated Bluetooth, but that turned out to be an extra driver not even found by default.

    Hi Eddie

Thanks for your input. I already ordered a floppy today - shall arrive tomorrow. I'll try it asap and give feedback here.

For the unknown device look in the swsetup folder in the root of C on a newly unboxed laptop and browse to C:\SWSetup\ESPtools\Disk1\TPM Driver (or download the appropriate driver from hp)... thanks for the method in the 1st entry, second problem

@Chris: It wasn't the TPM driver. See my new blog post on this issue: http://www.rimann.org/mario/blog/detail-view/archive/2006/november/13/hp_nc6320_unknown_device_now_k[..]

Did you install the HP ProtectTools? Install in this order:
    HP ProtectTools Security Manager
HP Device Access Manager for ProtectTools
HP Credential and Fingerprint Manager for ProtectTools
HP Embedded Security for ProtectTools and Infineon TPM Driver
HP Smart Card Security Module for ProtectTools

Also, make sure the AuthenTec Fingerprint Driver is installed. It worked for me.

Hi! You have to see the exact HDD model name, visit HP website and download the driver for THAT Hdd. Then, create a new cd of Windows Xp from a old one, by using some "adding software" like N-Lite. But you have to read a lot of Theory about the winnt.sif file (a file that you have to add, manually, in I386 folder). Then, during the first installation step, Windows will load even your HDD exact drivers and NEVER say to you "hard disk not found" (except if your HDD is REALLY crashed! :-D )

Steps to modify a Windows XP image to support SATA Native Mode

    1) Enter F10 Setup, and go to System Configuration/Device Configurations/SATA Native Mode to Disable.
    2) Install Windows XP Service Pack 2 in whatever manner is typical for your organization.
    3) Download the Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver, SoftPaq SP32478.exe, from www.hp.com.
    4) Extract all the files from the SoftPaq. A USB floppy is necessary for this step. Run sp32478; this will create a floppy disk. The files will be located on this floppy.
    5) These files should be located on the floppy disk.
    a. iaahci.cat
    b. iaahci.inf
    c. iastor.cat
    d. iastor.inf
    e. iastor.sys
    f. license.txt
    g. readme.txt
    h. txtsetup.oem
    6) Download and run the Intel Chipset Installation Utility for ICH7, SoftPaq SP32781, from www.hp.com.
    7) In Device Manager, right-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers/Intel 82801 GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller and select "Update Driver".
    8) Follow these steps to complete the Hardware Update Wizard:
    a. At the first dialog, select "No, not this time" when prompted to connect to Windows Update.
    b. At the next dialog, select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".
    c. At the next dialog, select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install".
    d. When prompted to select the device driver you want to install for this hardware, do not choose anything but click the "Have Disk..."-button.
    e. Type "A:\" and click OK.
    f. When prompted to select the device driver you want to install for this hardware, select the Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
    g. A warning that Windows cannot verify that the device is compatible with your hardware will appear. When asked if you want to continue installing the driver, select Yes.
    h. The installation will complete.
    9) Shut down Windows and restart the computer. Enter F10 setup when prompted during the boot.
    10) Go to System Configuration/Device Configurations/SATA Native Mode and change it to Enable, then save settings and exit F10 Setup.
    11) After Windows restarts, the additional SATA components will be updated. A System Settings Change will appear. When asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?" click Yes.
    12) When Windows restarts, the SATA AHCI drivers will be completely installed.

You don't need a floppy device. Download the driver and extract it (winrar...), than extract the new file fia a ISO-Program.
Then add the driver via nlite. You don't need to read that much,
anyway with that, anybody should get it done:
