Gentoo vs. Ubuntu

While trying to install Gentoo Linux as a side project (I've written about that here), we found some problems. After compiling the linux kernel over the weekend (did I mention that it's an old PC?) and then the X server from monday morning until late in the night, I was very happy to see the X server starting without problems on Tuesday morning.

We decided to install KDE and started that with "emerge kde". After downloading the compiler started and ran for a long time.

Today then I tried to start the X server with KDE - but failed. Even after configuring the xorg.conf file with appropriate data (as far as I think), the X server still didn't like to come up and speak with us.

After a short chat with Stefan, we decided to stop that and install Ubuntu instead. The first thought of having the same distribution as on our servers was not wrong. But it showed up that while Gentoo might be the perfect solution for our servers, it has not to be the right choice for this project. Of course the learning effect of having Gentoo set up would have been nice - but it would cost to much time right now (time we don't have due to different projects like "MISAS").

So I downloaded Ubuntu (damn fast fibre-link *smile*) and installed it right away which took only a few minutes from my time. The next days we'll set up that stuff that should run on this machine in the end:

  • Nagios
  • Maybe a mail server for sending out notifications
  • Browser in kiosk mode
  • Our homegrown NOC-Screen with all the neccessary information (still to be "developed")

Let's see how fast we'll go on with this project. I'm curious myself :-)
